How to change your outboard motors gear box oil
14/11/2024Let’s walk through the process of changing the gear box oil on a Yamaha outboard engine. This is an important part of regular maintenance to ensure that your engine continues to run smoothly and efficiently. This gear box is filled with gear case oil, which lubricates the gears, and prevents wear. Ensuring regular maintenance, including yearly oil changes, is crucial to the longevity and performance of the outboard. Over time, gear oil degrades and can become contaminated, leading to potential gear damage or even failure. By changing the gear box oil annually, you help protect your gearbox, ensuring reliable operation and extending its service life.
In order to service your gear box, you will need the following-
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Gear oil pump
- Yamaha lower unit gear oil (make sure it's the correct type for your specific engine model)
- New washers for the drain and vent screws (always replace them to ensure a proper seal)
- Rags or paper towels for cleanup
- Drain pan to catch the old oil
- Gloves to keep your hands clean
Once you have everything required, you can go through the following steps to maintain the gear box-
- Place the drain pan under the lower unit to catch the old oil.
- Find the drain screw on the bottom of the gear case and the vent screw located above it. The vent screw is typically above the waterline on the lower unit. Using your flat-head screwdriver, start by loosening the vent screw but do not remove it completely yet. This will allow air to enter, helping the oil drain more smoothly.
- Place your drain pan directly under the drain screw. Now, remove the drain screw completely. Old gear oil will start draining out. Once the oil flow slows, completely remove the vent screw. This will allow the remaining oil to drain out. Let the gear case drain fully, which might take a few minutes.
- Examine the old gear oil. If it looks milky, it may indicate water intrusion, which should be addressed before refilling with new oil. Dark or burnt-smelling oil indicates its past time for a change.
- Wipe away any residue around the drain and vent holes with a rag.
- Attach the gear oil pump to the bottle of new gear oil and insert the pump nozzle into the drain hole at the bottom of the gear case. Start pumping the new gear oil into the gear case. You'll know it’s full when oil starts seeping out of the vent hole at the top. This ensures the gear case is filled to the correct level without any air pockets.
- Let the oil sit for a minute. This makes sure that all air is out of the gear case oil. Fill the gear box a little more if required.
- Once oil begins to flow out of the vent hole, quickly reinstall the vent screw with a new washer. This prevents oil from draining back out while you install the drain screw. After the vent screw is secured, remove the oil pump nozzle and quickly reinstall the drain screw, again using a new washer. Ensure both the drain and vent screws are tightened securely.
- Wipe away any excess oil around the screws and lower unit. Properly dispose of the old oil by taking it to a recycling centre or marine service shop.
- Properly dispose of the used oil and any contaminated rags according to local environmental regulations.
Changing the gear box oil on your Yamaha outboard is a straightforward process that you can perform with basic tools and a little patience. Regularly changing the gear oil every 100 hours of operation or once a season (whichever comes first) is critical to maintaining your outboard's performance and extending its lifespan.
Proper maintenance will keep your Yamaha outboard running smoothly, ensuring that every time you head out on the water, you do so with confidence.
